Off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye is Belize's oldest marine reserve, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Hol Chan is Mayan for "little channel". The entire reserve focuses on a cut through the reef (called a quebrada) which is little more than 23 m (85 ft) wide and 9 m (29 ft) deep. This sanctuary was officially established in 1987, and since then the return of all species of fish and growth of coral formations inside the reef has been quite fantastic.
