The Local Diving Experience...
A TYPICAL DAY OF DIVING...
After everyone is onboard and briefed on the dive profile, its a short ride
in the boat to the first divesite of the day. Once the dive boat is secured to one
of the many mooring buoys implemented in an effort to avoid anchor
damage to the reef, divers enter the water, by way of a back roll entry
from the boat.
Begining your initial decent you will find yourself in a gorgonian plain
at around 40-50ft (12-17m) of water. You will imediately see the abundance of
soft corals, see fans and sea rods, as well as the smaller marine life
with the occasional turtle or nurse shark passing by. You will also be
able to start to make out the unique canyon features that we have here.
A short swim due east of the boat yields the edge of the deep reef which
starts at 50-60ft (17-20m) and continues down well past 100ft (33m). The
majority of the dive is spent between 60-80 ft (20-27m), exploring the spur
& groove canyons.
Some of the more adventurous sites are with the caverns and tunnels. These are
swim through's, not caves, where divers exit out from short tunnels, between
20-30ft (7-10m). We can take you through different tunnels on alot of the dives as
there are many to select from along the reef.
Continue on the dive making your way along the tip of the reef in about 60ft (20m)
of water cruising along to see what different features the reef has to offer. Out
on the edge you can get that sensation of hanging out in the deep blue while still
within sight of the canyons as the visibility of the water can reach up to 150feet
on the clearest of days.
Make you ascent and recommended saftey stop after approx 35-45min of bottom time
based upon the depth of the dive and the rate at which you consume air. Depending
upon your experience level we adjust the diving to your level. If you are better
on air consumption and have a computer... no problem!
After you reach the surface you'll see me heading over to pick you up. All the dives
that we do are "drift" dives. Or more properly called swim-drift
dives as there is little to no current here. We then help you out of your equipment
before you enter back into the boat. Once everyone is back on board we head back
through one of the channels in the reef to the island for a surface interval...
Then it's off we go again!
In front of the island we have 25 miles of reef on which to dive.
From the busy sites to the extremely secluded ones, we can give you
more of a variation than a typical dive shop that only does local
diving right in front of town.
Local diving can be done every day, weather permitting, starting at
9:00 a.m, at approx. 11:00 a.m., then in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
we plan for two more dives unless we have students and instruction.
Night dives are also available upon request.
And, since we do not consider ourselves to be a dive shop but more your tour
guide, we also to try to provide you with a locals perspective to the
island and San Pedro Town. We know where to find the best food...
and where to get the cheapest beer...
